DEACON
—See SERVANT
—ROMANS
16:1. 1I commend unto you Phebe our sister, which is a servant
of the church
which is at Cenchrea:.
Note: Some translations have
taken the liberty to translate “servant” as “deaconess”. In and of itself,
the word means “servant”. There is no authority for instituting a female deacon.
Consider the word “elder”. Strictly speaking, it means one who is older.
Strictly speaking, an elder may be unrighteous, unwise, female, criminal, etc.
Biblically speaking, the office of elder means much more and has strict
limitations. In the same way, the office of deacon involves more
limitations than merely servant

for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou

—EXODUS 30:20-21 20when
they go into the tent of meeting, they shall wash with water, that they die not;
or when they come near to the altar to minister, to burn an offering made by
fire unto Jehovah. 21So they shall wash their hands and their feet,
that they die not: and it shall be a statute for ever to them, even to him and
to his seed throughout their generations.
—EXODUS 28:43 43And
they shall be upon Aaron, and upon his sons, when they go in unto the tent of
meeting, or when they come near unto the altar to minister in the holy place;
that they bear not iniquity, and die: it shall be a statute for ever unto him
and unto his seed after him.

27because thy heart was tender, and thou didst humble thyself before God,
when thou heardest his words against this place, and against the inhabitants
thereof, and hast humbled thyself before me, and hast rent thy clothes, and wept
before me; I also have heard thee, saith Jehovah. 28Behold, I will
gather thee to thy fathers, and thou shalt be gathered to thy grave in peace,
neither shall thine eyes see all the evil that I will bring upon this place, and
upon the inhabitants thereof. And they brought back word to the king.

—PSALM 103:15-18 15As
for man, his days are as grass; As a flower of the field, so he flourisheth.
16For the wind passeth over it, and it is gone; And the place thereof
shall know it no more. 17But the lovingkindness of Jehovah is from
everlasting to everlasting upon them that fear him, And his righteousness unto
children’s children; 18To such as keep his covenant, And to those
that remember his precepts to do them.
—PSALM 39:4-7 4Jehovah,
make me to know mine end, And the measure of my days, what it is; Let me know
how frail I am. 5Behold, thou hast made my days as
handbreadths; And my life-time is as nothing before thee: Surely every man at
his best estate is altogether vanity. 6Surely every man walketh in a
vain show; Surely they are disquieted in vain: he heapeth up riches, and
knoweth not who shall gather them. 7And now, Lord, what wait I for?
My hope is in thee.

—ECCLESIASTES 2:14-16 14The
wise man’s eyes are in his head, and the fool walketh in darkness: and yet I
perceived that one event happeneth to them all. 15Then said I in my
heart, As it happeneth to the fool, so will it happen even to me; and why was I
then more wise? Then said I in my heart, that this also is vanity. 16For
of the wise man, even as of the fool, there is no remembrance for ever; seeing
that in the days to come all will have been long forgotten. And how doth the
wise man die even as the fool!
—ECCLESIASTES 8:8 8There

power over the day of death; and there is no discharge in war: neither shall

—ECCLESIASTES 9:10 10Whatsoever

device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in Sheol, whither thou goest.
—ECCLESIASTES 12:1-7 1Remember
also thy Creator in the days of thy youth, before the evil days come, and the
years draw nigh, when thou shalt say, I have no pleasure in them; 2before
the sun, and the light, and the moon, and the stars, are darkened, and the
clouds return after the rain; 3in the day when the keepers of the
house shall tremble, and the strong men shall bow themselves, and the grinders
cease because they are few, and those that look out of the windows shall be
darkened, 4and the doors shall be shut in the street; when the sound
of the grinding is low, and one shall rise up at the voice of a bird, and all
the daughters of music shall be brought low; 5yea, they shall be
afraid of that which is high, and terrors shall be in the way; and
the almond-tree shall blossom, and the grasshopper shall be a burden, and desire
shall fail; because man goeth to his everlasting home, and the mourners go about
the streets: 6before the silver cord is loosed, or the golden bowl is
broken, or the pitcher is broken at the fountain, or the wheel broken at the
cistern, 7and the dust returneth to the earth as it was, and the
spirit returneth unto God who gave it.

57:1 1The righteous perisheth, and no man layeth it to heart; and
merciful men are taken away, none considering that the righteous is taken away
from the evil to come.
—EZEKIEL
18:20 20The soul that sinneth, it shall die: the son shall not bear

the wicked shall be upon him.

—MATTHEW
22:31-32 31But as touching the resurrection of the dead, have ye not
read that which was spoken unto you by God, saying, 32I am the God of
Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob? God is not the God
of the dead, but of the living.
—MARK
12:25-27 25For when they shall rise from the dead, they neither
marry, nor are given in marriage; but are as angels in heaven. 26But
as touching the dead, that they are raised; have ye not read in the book of
Moses, in the place concerning the Bush, how God spake unto him, saying,
I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob?
27He is not the God of the dead, but of the living: ye do greatly err.
—LUKE
12:4-5 4And I say unto you my friends, Be not afraid of them that
kill the body, and after that have no more that they can do. 5But I
will warn you whom ye shall fear: Fear him, who after he hath killed hath power
to cast into hell; yea, I say unto you, Fear him.
—LUKE
16:23-28 23And in Hades he lifted up his eyes, being in torments,
and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom. 24And he cried
and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip
the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am in anguish in this
flame. 25But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime
receivedst thy good things, and Lazarus in like manner evil things: but now here
he is comforted, and thou art in anguish. 26And besides all this,
between us and you there is a great gulf fixed, that they that would pass from
hence to you may not be able, and that none may cross over from thence to us.
27And he said, I pray thee therefore, father, that thou wouldest send
him to my father’s house; 28for I have five brethren; that he may
testify unto them, lest they also come into this place of torment.

23:43 43And he said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, Today shalt
thou be with me in Paradise.
—JOHN
3:13 13And no one hath ascended into heaven, but he that descended

—JOHN
11:11-16 11These things spake he: and after this he saith unto them,
Our friend Lazarus is fallen asleep; but I go, that I may awake him out of
sleep. 12The disciples therefore said unto him, Lord, if he is fallen
asleep, he will recover. 13Now Jesus had spoken of his death: but
they thought that he spake of taking rest in sleep. 14Then Jesus
therefore said unto them plainly, Lazarus is dead. 15And I am glad
for your sakes that I was not there, to the intent ye may believe; nevertheless
let us go unto him. 16Thomas therefore, who is called Didymus, said
unto his fellow-disciples, Let us also go, that we may die with him.
—JOHN 12:24-25 24Verily,
verily, I say unto you, Except a grain of wheat fall into the earth and die, it
abideth by itself alone; but if it die, it beareth much fruit. 25he
that loveth his life loseth it; and he that hateth his life in this world shall
keep it unto life eternal.
—ACTS
7:59-60 59And they stoned Stephen, calling upon the Lord, and
saying, Lord Jesus, receive my spirit. 60And he kneeled down, and
cried with a loud voice, Lord, lay not this sin to their charge. And when he had
said this, he fell asleep.
—ROMANS
6:9-11 9knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no
more; death no more hath dominion over him. 10For the death that he
died, he died unto sin once: but the life that he liveth, he liveth unto God.
11Even so reckon ye also yourselves to be dead unto sin, but alive
unto God in Christ Jesus.
—ROMANS 7:24 24Wretched
man that I am! who shall deliver me out of the body of this death?
—ROMANS
8:13 13for if ye live after the flesh, ye must die; but if by the
Spirit ye put to death the deeds of the body, ye shall live.
—ROMANS
14:8 8For whether we live, we live unto the Lord; or whether we die,
we die unto the Lord: whether we live therefore, or die, we are the Lord’s.
—1 CORINTHIANS 15:35-44
35But some one will say, How are the dead raised? and with what manner of
body do they come? 36Thou foolish one, that which thou thyself sowest
is not quickened except it die: 37and that which thou sowest, thou
sowest not the body that shall be, but a bare grain, it may chance of wheat, or
of some other kind; 38but God giveth it a body even as it pleased
him, and to each seed a body of its own. 39All flesh is not the Same
flesh: but there is one flesh of men, and another flesh of beasts, and
another flesh of birds, and another of fishes. 40There are also
celestial bodies, and bodies terrestrial: but the glory of the celestial is one,
and the glory of the terrestrial is another. 41There is one
glory of the sun, and another glory of the moon, and another glory of the stars;
for one star differeth from another star in glory. 42So also is the
resurrection of the dead. It is sown in corruption; it is raised in
incorruption: 43it is sown in dishonor; it is raised in glory: it is
sown in weakness; it is raised in power: 44it is sown a natural body;
it is raised a spiritual body. If there is a natural body, there is also a
spiritual body.
—2 CORINTHIANS 2:15-16
15For we are a sweet savor of Christ unto God, in them that are saved, and
in them that perish; 16to the one a savor from death unto death; to
the other a savor from life unto life. And who is sufficient for these things?
—2
CORINTHIANS 4:16-18 16Wherefore we faint not; but though our outward
man is decaying, yet our inward man is renewed day by day. 17For our
light affliction, which is for the moment, worketh for us more and more
exceedingly an eternal weight of glory; 18while we look not at the
things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things
which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal.
—2 CORINTHIANS 5:6-8 6Being
therefore always of good courage, and knowing that, whilst we are at home in the
body, we are absent from the Lord 7for we walk by faith, not by
sight; 8we are of good courage, I say, and are willing rather to be
absent from the body, and to be at home with the Lord.
—PHILIPPIANS
1:21-24 21For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain. 22But
if to live in the flesh,—if this shall bring fruit from my work, then what I
shall choose I know not. 23But I am in a strait betwixt the two,
having the desire to depart and be with Christ; for it is very far better:
24yet to abide in the flesh is more needful for your sake.

3:3 3For ye died, and your life is hid with Christ in God.
—1 THESSALONIANS 4:13-17
13But we would not have you ignorant, brethren, concerning them that fall
asleep; that ye sorrow not, even as the rest, who have no hope. 14For
if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also that are fallen
asleep in Jesus will God bring with him. 15For this we say unto you
by the word of the Lord, that we that are alive, that are left unto the coming
of the Lord, shall in no wise precede them that are fallen asleep. 16For
the Lord himself shall descend from heaven, with a shout, with the voice of the
archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first;
17then we that are alive, that are left, shall together with them be
caught up in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be
with the Lord.

TIMOTHY 4:6-8 6For I am already being offered, and the time of my
departure is come. 7I have fought the good fight, I have finished the
course, I have kept the faith: 8henceforth there is laid up for me
the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give to
me at that day; and not to me only, but also to all them that have loved his
appearing.
—HEBREWS 2:14-15. 14Since
then the children are sharers in flesh and blood, he also himself in like manner
partook of the Same; that through death he might bring to nought him that had
the power of death, that is, the devil; 15and might deliver all them
who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage.

—2 PETER 1:13-14 13Wherefore
girding up the loins of your mind, be sober and set your hope perfectly on the
grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation of Jesus Christ; 14as
children of obedience, not fashioning yourselves according to your former lusts
in the time of your ignorance:
—REVELATION 3:1 1And

write: These things saith he that hath the seven Spirits of God, and the seven
stars: I know thy works, that thou hast a name that thou livest, and thou art
dead.
—REVELATION 6:9-11. 9And
when he opened the fifth seal, I saw underneath the altar the souls of them that
had been slain for the word of God, and for the testimony which they held:
10and they cried with a great voice, saying, How long, O Master, the holy
and true, dost thou not judge and avenge our blood on them that dwell on the
earth? 11And there was given them to each one a white robe; and it
was said unto them, that they should rest yet for a little time, until their
fellow-servants also and their brethren, who should be killed even as they were,
should have fulfilled their course.
—REVELATION 14:13 13And
I heard the voice from heaven saying, Write, Blessed are the dead who die in the
Lord from henceforth: yea, saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their
labors; for their works follow with them.
—REVELATION
20:12-14 12And I saw the dead, the great and the small, standing
before the throne; and books were opened: and another book was opened, which is
the book of life: and the dead were judged out of the things which were
written in the books, according to their works. 13And the sea gave up
the dead that were in it; and death and Hades gave up the dead that were in
them: and they were judged every man according to their works. 14And
death and Hades were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death,
even the lake of fire. 15And if any was not found written in the
book of life, he was cast into the lake of fire.

—1 KINGS 19:1-17 1And
Ahab told Jezebel all that Elijah had done, and withal how he had slain all the
prophets with the sword. 2Then Jezebel send a messenger unto Elijah,
saying, So let the gods do to me, and more also, if I make not thy life as the
life of one of them by to-morrow about this time. 3And when he saw
that, he arose, and went for his life, and came to Beer-sheba, which belongeth
to Judah, and left his servant there.
4But he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness, and came and sat
down under a juniper-tree: and he requested for himself that he might die, and
said, It is enough; now, O Jehovah, take away my life; for I am not better than
my fathers. 5And he lay down and slept under a juniper-tree; and,
behold, an angel touched him, and said unto him, Arise and eat. 6And
he looked, and, behold, there was at his head a cake baken on the coals, and a
cruse of water. And he did eat and drink, and laid him down again. 7And
the angel of Jehovah came again the second time, and touched him, and said,
Arise and eat, because the journey is too great for thee. 8And he
arose, and did eat and drink, and went in the strength of that food forty days
and forty nights unto Horeb the mount of God. 9And he came thither
unto a cave, and lodged there; and, behold, the word of Jehovah came to him, and
he said unto him, What doest thou here, Elijah? 10And he said, I have
been very jealous for Jehovah, the God of hosts; for the children of Israel have
forsaken thy covenant, thrown down thine altars, and slain thy prophets with the
sword: and I, even I only, am left; and they seek my life, to take it away.
11And he said, Go forth, and stand upon the mount before Jehovah. And,
behold, Jehovah passed by, and a great and strong wind rent the mountains, and
brake in pieces the rocks before Jehovah; but Jehovah was not in the wind: and
after the wind an earthquake; but Jehovah was not in the earthquake: 12and
after the earthquake a fire; but Jehovah was not in the fire: and after the fire
a still small voice. 13And it was so, when Elijah heard it, that he
wrapped his face in his mantle, and went out, and stood in the entrance of the
cave. And, behold, there came a voice unto him, and said, What doest thou here,
Elijah? 14And he said, I have been very jealous for Jehovah, the God
of hosts; for the children of Israel have forsaken thy covenant, thrown down
thine altars, and slain thy prophets with the sword; and I, even I only, am
left; and they seek my life, to take it away. 15And Jehovah said
unto him, Go, return on thy way to the wilderness of Damascus: and when thou
comest, thou shalt anoint Hazael to be king over Syria; 16and Jehu
the son of Nimshi shalt thou anoint to be king over Israel; and Elisha the son
of Shaphat of Abel-meholah shalt thou anoint to be prophet in thy room. 17And
it shall come to pass, that him that escapeth from the sword of Hazael shall
Jehu slay; and him that escapeth from the sword of Jehu shall Elisha slay.

chasteneth, And scourgeth every son whom he receiveth. 7It is for
chastening that ye endure; God dealeth with you as with sons; for what son is
there whom his father chasteneth not? 8But if ye are without
chastening, whereof all have been made partakers, then are ye bastards, and not
sons. 9Furthermore, we had the fathers of our flesh to chasten us,
and we gave them reverence: shall we not much rather be in subjection unto the
Father of spirits, and live? 10For they indeed for a few days
chastened us as seemed good to them; but he for our profit, that
we may be partakers of his holiness. 11All chastening seemeth

CORINTHIANS 2:12-13 12But we received, not the spirit of the world,
but the spirit which is from God; that we might know the things that were freely

man’s wisdom teacheth, but which the Spirit teacheth; combining spiritual things

—PROVERBS 20:1. 1Wine
is a mocker, strong drink a brawler; And whosoever erreth thereby is not wise.
—PROVERBS 23:21 21For
the drunkard and the glutton shall come to poverty; And drowsiness will clothe
a man with rags.
—PROVERBS 23:29-35. 29Who
hath woe? who hath sorrow? who hath contentions? Who hath complaining? who hath
wounds without cause? Who hath redness of eyes? 30They that tarry
long at the wine; They that go to seek out mixed wine. 31Look not
thou upon the wine when it is red, When it sparkleth in the cup, When it goeth
down smoothly: 32At the last it biteth like a serpent, And stingeth
like an adder. 33Thine eyes shall behold strange things, And thy
heart shall utter perverse things. 34Yea, thou shalt be as he that
lieth down in the midst of the sea, Or as he that lieth upon the top of a mast.
35They have stricken me, shalt thou say, and I was not hurt;
They have beaten me, and I felt it not: When shall I awake? I will seek it yet
again.
—PROVERBS 31:4-7 4It is not
for kings, O Lemuel, it is not for kings to drink wine; Nor for princes to say,
Where is strong drink? 5Lest they drink, and forget the law, And pervert the
justice due to any that is afflicted. 6Give strong drink unto him that is ready
to perish, And wine unto the bitter in soul: 7Let him drink, and forget his
poverty, And remember his misery no more.
—ECCLESIASTES 2:3 3I

with wisdom, and how to lay hold on folly, till I might see what it was good for
the sons of men that they should do under heaven all the days of their life.

—JEREMIAH 23:1-4 1Woe
unto the shepherds that destroy and scatter the sheep of my pasture! saith
Jehovah. 2Therefore thus saith Jehovah, the God of Israel, against
the shepherds that feed my people: Ye have scattered my flock, and driven them
away, and have not visited them; behold, I will visit upon you the evil of your
doings, saith Jehovah. 3And I will gather the remnant of my flock out
of all the countries whither I have driven them, and will bring them again to
their folds; and they shall be fruitful and multiply. 4And I will set
up shepherds over them, who shall feed them; and they shall fear no more, nor be
dismayed, neither shall any be lacking, saith Jehovah.

and Timothy, servants of Christ Jesus, to all the saints in Christ Jesus that
are at Philippi, with the bishops and deacons:
— 1 THESSALONIANS 5:12-13
12But we beseech you, brethren, to know them that labor among you,
and are over you in the Lord, and admonish you; 13and to esteem them
exceeding highly in love for their work’s sake. Be at peace among yourselves.
—1 TIMOTHY 3:1-7 1Faithful
is the saying, If a man seeketh the office of a bishop, he desireth a good work.
2The bishop therefore must be without reproach, the husband of one
wife, temperate, sober-minded, orderly, given to hospitality, apt to teach;
3no brawler, no striker; but gentle, not contentious, no lover of money;
4one that ruleth well his own house, having his children in
subjection with all gravity; 5but if a man knoweth not how to rule
his own house, how shall he take care of the church of God? 6not a
novice, lest being puffed up he fall into the condemnation of the devil. 7Moreover
he must have good testimony from them that are without; lest he fall into
reproach and the snare of the devil.
—1
TIMOTHY 5:17-20 17Let the elders that rule well be counted worthy of
double honor, especially those who labor in the word and in teaching. 18For
the scripture saith, Thou shalt not muzzle the ox when he treadeth out the corn.
And, The laborer is worthy of his hire. 19Against an elder receive
not an accusation, except at the mouth of two or three witnesses. 20Them
that sin reprove in the sight of all, that the rest also may be in fear.
—TITUS
1:5-9 5For this cause left I thee in Crete, that thou shouldest set
in order the things that were wanting, and appoint elders in every city, as I
gave thee charge; 6if any man is blameless, the husband of one wife,
having children that believe, who are not accused of riot or unruly. 7For
the bishop must be blameless, as God’s steward; not self-willed, not soon angry,
no brawler, no striker, not greedy of filthy lucre; 8but given to
hospitality, a lover of good, sober-minded, just, holy, self-controlled; 9holding
to the faithful word which is according to the teaching, that he may be able to
exhort in the sound doctrine, and to convict the gainsayers.
—HEBREWS 13:1717Obey
them that have the rule over you, and submit to them: for they watch in
behalf of your souls, as they that shall give account; that they may do this
with joy, and not with grief: for this were unprofitable for you.
—JAMES 5:14. 14Is
any among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray
over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord:
—1
PETER 5:1-4 1The elders among you I exhort, who am a fellow-elder,
and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, who am also a partaker of the glory
that shall be revealed: 2Tend the flock of God which is among you,
exercising the oversight, not of constraint, but willingly, according to the
will of God; nor yet for filthy lucre, but of a ready mind; 3neither
as lording it over the charge allotted to you, but making yourselves ensamples
to the flock. 4And when the chief Shepherd shall be manifested, ye
shall receive the crown of glory that fadeth not away.
—JUDE
1:12 12These are they who are hidden rocks in your love-feasts when
