Sponsoring a Cadet - Okay, But What’s In
It For Me?

John and Chun Hui Eriksen,
Cadet Ministry Coordinators
We're blessed to live in Colorado Springs for a lot of reasons - beautiful
scenery, nice weather, and outdoor activities galore. But have you ever thought
that an Air Force Academy Cadets could be a blessing too? Well, if you became a
sponsor of an Academy Cadet, chances are you'd feel even more blessed than you
already do.
How?
Sponsoring a Cadet is a little like an adoption. You and your children become a
surrogate family for a young man or woman far from home. You'll not only enjoy
the energy, fun, and deepening relationship a Cadet will bring to your home, but
you'll soon find your cadet has adopted you too. Cadets are well cared for at
the Academy but dorm rooms, cafeterias, and classrooms cannot compare with a
warm home, a loving family, and a home-cooked meal.
But the most important element of being a Cadet sponsor is you'll be helping a
young Christian keep their faith alive. As important as your family and your
home will be to your Cadet, helping them worship regularly is the greatest gift
to your Cadet (and service to God) that you can provide. Study after study prove
that Christians often stop worshipping, and, in some cases, leave the church
entirely, after a change in location, job, or support structure. Cadets are away
from that support structure of home and family for the first time in their lives
and the conditions are ripe for drifting away from the Lord's church. How
wonderful then, to be such a vital part of a Cadet's, and a young Christian's,
spiritual life. What's in it for me? Answer - LOTS!

Building Bridges is a ministry dedicated to reaching those
who are not part of our family. This ministry is made up of several
dedicated members who have a deep concern for those outside our family and have
prepared themselves for making face-to-face contact with those to whom God has opened a
door of opportunity. Building Bridges provides real life experience in
evangelism that benefits our members and those with whom they come in contact.
This ministry is overseen by our elders and is coordinated by our Youth and
Evangelism Minister

For God so loved the world
that He gave his one and only Son,
that who ever believes in Him
shall not perish but have eternal life.
This passage from John 3:16, perhaps the most
memorized verse in all the Bible, is the cornerstone of the World Bible School
ministry. God's love is powerful. This same love motivates God's children to
share His gospel - the good news of a promised home in Heaven.
World Bible School began in the 1950's as a way to encourage members of the
armed services stationed overseas. Along the way, these free correspondence
courses have gained popularity and are now sent to 141 countries around the
globe. Access is no longer limited to postal mail, but students can now study
God's word via e-mail and through the WBS website,
www.wbschool.org
At the Pikes Peak congregation, we have many teachers eager to share God's word.
Some of the teachers are as young as 12 years old, but are already demonstrating
their willingness to apply their time helping others enjoy a more fulfilled life
- a life that is centered around Jesus Christ and His teachings.

We also have a very dedicated support staff who works diligently to see that
lessons are processed correctly, and mailed out in a timely manner.
and then he said
to his disciples,
"The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few.
Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore,
to send out workers into his harvest field." Matt 9:37-38
World Bible School is a work of holy love; we believe that
every soul is precious to God.

As we grow in Christ, Christians need to move from being only students of the
word to being teachers as well. Members of the Pikes Peak church of Christ
who express an interest in teaching are interviewed by our elders to confirm
their soundness of understanding Christ's teachings. (Acts 20:28,29)
Opportunities exist for both men and women to teach classes. Men teach the
teens and adult classes except for the "Ladies Only" classes. Men and
women teach children's classes from ages 1 to 11.
One of the best ways to learn about a subject or text is to prepare for a
13-week quarter!
Greeters: Volunteers (usually couples,
but not always) who greet members and visitors at the main and east entrances.
Visitor Cards: Volunteers who call or stop
by to see local visitors
Working Groups: Each deacon needs one or
more working groups to help perform all the work that must be done.
Navajo Missions: Led by our Missions Deacon,
congregational financial support to the Navajo churches are augmented with
annual trips to the Navajo reservation to help with VBS, gospel meetings or
facility maintenance. Click here to find out more about the
Navajo Missions. The Pikes
Peak church of Christ hosted the 2007 American Indian Missions
Seminar.
Calhan, Colorado church of Christ: Pikes
Peak financially supports the church at Calhan in northeastern El Paso county.
We also visit their assembly and help them with any projects at hand. Calhan
leads the outreach effort at the El Paso County Fair.

Mountain States Children's Home: Mountain
States Children's Home in Longmont, Colorado extends services to hurting
children in an effort to meet their physical needs, heal their emotional hurts,
challenge their minds and teach them moral principles, in order to reach the
goals of reuniting them with their families or preparing for independence.
The Pikes Peak church of Christ has supported MSCH for many years,
providing direct financial aid from both the congregation and individual
members. We also support the annual "Change for Change" fund raiser,
as well drives to collect food and other necessary supplies.
The Ladies' Bible Class regularly prepares and sends birthday cards to the children and staff.
